What does caffeine look like? White crystalline purine
Scientific name: 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine
According to the FDA caffeine is toxic above about 10 grams a day (like 50-100 cups of coffee in 4 hours)
Powder for as a dietary supplement- 1 teaspoon could be lethal
70% of caffeine consumed is in coffee, 16% soft drinks, 12% tea
Reasons we should avoid caffeine or consciously consume it:
- Addictive- mild physical addiction- not the same as illicit drugs
- Too much can cause mood swings
- Causes insomnia-
- Bone loss- over 744 milligrams a day- some loss but not risky
- Pregnancy and miscarriage-
- No link at low levels
- March of dimes and AMA recommend less than 200MG day
- Obesity- but from the soda, not the caffeine
Bottom line-biggest upside caffeine makes you alert, attentive and improve cognitive function- biggest downside affects you sleeping pattern
