    Episode Summary: Should I Give Up Caffeine

    What does caffeine look like? White crystalline purine

    Scientific name: 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine

    According to the FDA caffeine is toxic above about 10 grams a day (like 50-100 cups of coffee in 4 hours)

    Powder for as a dietary supplement- 1 teaspoon could be lethal

    70% of caffeine consumed is in coffee, 16% soft drinks, 12% tea

    Reasons we should avoid caffeine or consciously consume it:

    1. Addictive- mild physical addiction- not the same as illicit drugs
    2. Too much can cause mood swings
    3. Causes insomnia-
    4. Bone loss- over 744 milligrams a day- some loss but not risky
    5. Pregnancy and miscarriage-
      1. No link at low levels
      2. March of dimes and AMA recommend less than 200MG day
    6. Obesity- but from the soda, not the caffeine

    Bottom line-biggest upside caffeine makes you alert, attentive and improve cognitive function- biggest downside affects you sleeping pattern
